Gordon last appeared in Half-Life 2: Episode Two, an extension of the 2004 game Half-Life 2. Alyx’s ending is still an obvious hint that Valve isn’t done with Gordon Freeman, though.

As I said above, The Borealis is a pretty important ship. The Combine sacrificed their entire Citadel just to send out a message back to the Overworld. They're not going to destroy Earth while that ship remains. Speking of Combine portals reminds me of "Minerva" mod for HL2: Episode 1.

Having to rush to get a magnesson, drive to the strider, and then the magnesson explodes in your face because of hunters, or you miss because the magnesson takes up half your screen gets tedious fast. Wait ‘til you see what happens in Episode 3.
Gordon and Alyx were about to board the helicopter to go and search for the Borealis. Presumably that would have been the basis of Ep 3. Not a true cliffhanger in the sense of 'how did they get out of that one' but Valve did leave us hanging because they never finished the story.
